To keep the netting off the trees we drive 4 star posts into the ground around the drip line of the tree

Then we slip 2 lengths of poly pipe (two inch) over the posts and over the trees as hoops.

The posts give you a nice bit of rigid vertical height

Two inch diametre pipe is easiest to use because it slips straight over the star posts

If you have a large tree the poly will not be able to support itself and might collapse in the heat. I this case you may need to thread a piece of PVC electrical conduit up the pipe to help keep it rigid. Conduit is one of those things you can find dumped somewhere. Coduit does brea down when left exposed to sunlight for more than a few years, whereas poly last for ages.

You can either crisscross the hoops and join them where they cross (this is easiest but reduces the total volume enclosed) or you can create a series of parallel arches and connect them with a piece of light weight rigid material (we use a type of framing steel call top-hat). You will probably need to do a little bit of diagonal bracing with wire to stop the structure collapsing.

If you have a row of trees this is best because you can carry on the pattern indefinitely.

Then all you need to do is get your bird netting over your structure. Spare bits of poly pipe are good for poking but you will need a friend or two to help.

You can buy the star posts and the black poly pipe from rural supply stores or maybe a hardware store.

have fun.

n

Forum category: Learn and Teach / I Want Answers!
Forum thread: Netting a Fig Tree - how to do it

I have an old Bang and Oulsen Television to give away to someone who appreciates solid technology. It has a flat screen (not as flat as the LCD) but doesn't support DVD/Video player. This was passed onto me. Would have been top of the range in its day.

Forum category: Swap-Meet / Something to Give Swap or Trade
Forum thread: Give Away Bang & Oulsen Television

GINGER SNAPS (CHEZ PANISSE)
Keep it in the freezer so you can have fresh, hot ginger snaps whenever you want.
Yields about 70 cookies

220g (8 oz) salted butter
1 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp (280g) sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract/paste
2 small eggs or 1 1/2 large eggs
1/3 C (114g) molasses
Cream butter until soft. Add sugar, and beat until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and eggs, and beat again. Add molasses and beat until well incorporated.

3 C (360g) all-purpose flour
2 1/2 tsp baking soda
2 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/8 tsp ground black pepper – I like freshly ground pepper
Sift together the dry ingredients and add into the mixture. Mix until it all just comes together.

Line a 22 x 12 cm loaf pan with plastic wrap, so that some hangs over the sides. Press the dough into the bottom of the pan, pack it tightly, and try to make the top as level as possible. Cover the dough with the plastic overhangs. Freeze until very firm, preferably overnight.
Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Remove dough from the pan and unwrap from one side. Slice the "brick" into very thin slices, no more than 2mm. Place the slices on the cookie sheet (give them a little room, they will expand) and bake for 9 to 12 minutes, until the edges turn brown to dark brown (depending on how cooked and crispy you like them). Turn out on a rack to cool completely.
From http://chocolateandzucchini.com

Forum category: Swap-Meet / Something to Give Swap or Trade
Forum thread: Recipes

First you have to be a member of the site. Click 'Join this Site' in the right-side navigation panel.

This is a two step process.

First you need to upload you picture. Please make sure it is not a huge file size. This site has a maximum capacity of 300 Mb total and 10 Mb for any one file. If you have the software, please optimise any picture files for the web so their file size is minimised (Kb not Mb in size), or reduce the size of the picture.

To upload the file:
- Sign in (top right of any screen above the search box)
- Go to the Photo Gallery page
- Click on Files at the bottom of the screen
- Click on Upload File and follow the prompts. (Note that you can give the file a new name. Best not to. If you must, make sure you include the correct file extension (e.g. .jpg )
- The file will be attached to this page (but not visible on the page until you embed it - which is step 2)

To add the pic to the page:
- Go to the Photo Gallery page. You will see that it is laid out as a table with alternative rows for the descriptions and the pictures
- Click on the Edit button at the bottom of screen
- You will see the layout of the table in the wiki syntax with the cells of the table separated by two vertical lines (shift \ on your keyboard)
- Enter a brief description of the the photo in the first available "Words Here" cell… keep it brief to avoid distorting the table
- position your cursor in the "pic here" cell immediately below and with the mouse button depressed drag it over the "pic here" to highlight it
- release the mouse button and then click on the 'Insert Image Wizard" box above the editing pane - it's the right green button just left of the movie camera icon - click this
- the insert image wizard pop up screen appears
- click on the radio button just left of 'attached file' - the box below changes to reveal all the files have been attached to the page (it will become a long list in time!)
- find and select your file by clicking on it in the list
- in the 'size' selection box, select 'thumbnail'
- in the 'position' selection box, select 'center'
- select 'insert code'
- the Wizard will close and you will see the code in the edit age screen
- click on 'save' at the bottom of screen to save the changes
- repeat this as needed to upload more pictures (or you can upload several pics using the wizard before you save
- good luck!

Forum category: General / Whatever
Forum thread: How to upload pictures into the Photo Gallery
